This book is the 2nd edition of my introductionary Vala book – carefully reviewed by the new Vala maintainer Rico Tzschichholz. Many thanks to the nice folks at Apress who thought it would be a good idea to pick up my self-published book, revise, and make it available to a broader audience. It contains everything from the 1st edition plus a bunch of additional details. Dieses Buch ist die Veröffentlichung meiner Promotionsschrift, die ich zwischen 2001 und 2007 an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main am Institut für Informatik erstellt habe. Mein Doktorvater war Prof. Oswald Drobnik, der während dieser Zeit den Lehrstuhl für Telematik innehatte.

Inhaltlich geht es um Middleware, eine Softwareschicht, die zwischen der Netzwerkschicht und der Anwendungsschicht angesiedelt ist und die in verteilten Systemen Kommunikations- und Koordinationsaufgaben wahrnimmt. In der Arbeit wird die speziell für mobile verteilte Systeme geeignete komponentenbasierte µMiddle vorgestellt, die sich – abhängig von den Umgebungsbedingungen – zur Laufzeit adaptieren und rekonfigurieren kann.

Diesem Buch lag der Wunsch zugrunde, den Markt für Python-Bücher, der damals (2001) von Einsteigerbüchern dominiert wurde, durch ein Buch für Fortgeschrittene zu erweitern.

Entstanden ist eine Lern- und Entscheidungshilfe für die Programmierung graphischer Benutzungsoberflächen mit der Programmiersprache Python.

Als durchgängiges Beispiel wird eine Kontaktverwaltung implementiert, wobei besonderer Wert auf die Trennung von Business- und Anzeigelogik gelegt wird. Die Kontaktverwaltung wird jeweils mit den GUI-Toolkits Tk, Qt, wxWidgets und GTK+ ausprogrammiert.

Er beschreibt den Produktentwicklungsansatz der innovativen Firma OpenMoko, die sich zum Ziel gesetzt hatte, ein Mobiltelefon mit ausschließlich freier Software zu entwickeln. Geschrieben in der Zeit, als ich für Openmoko Inc. an der Softwarearchitektur arbeitete.

»Développement embarqué sur GTA01 et GTA02« 🇫🇷

This article describes the development for the GNU/Linux mobile phones GTA01 and GTA02 with an emphasis on the OpenEmbedded build system and the freesmartphone.org special interest middleware.

It was a coproduction with Jérome Blondon and Julien Cassignol, published in: »GNU/Linux Magazine France HS43«, Editions Diamond, 2009. It is available online.
